Professor, noted biblical scholar and widely read author Dr. Paul Maier will present a special lecture, “LUTHER AND THE REFORMATION: The Colorful Drama that Set the Stage for the Modern World.” The seminar will be hosted by St. John’s Lutheran Church of Grand Haven on October 19th and will begin at 7:00pm.
Dr. Maier is The Russell H. Seibert Professor of Ancient History at Western Michigan University, He lectures widely, and appears frequently in national radio, television, and newspaper interviews. More than seven million Maier books are now in print in seventeen languages, as well as over 250 scholarly articles and reviews in professional journals.
In his lecture, Dr. Maier will examine the role of the early reformers, the life and actions of Martin Luther including his momentous “tower experience” which changed his life -- and world history! He will explain how the reformation spread across Northern Europe, the role of Zwingli, Calvin, Knox, and Cranmer and how these reformers put their own “spin” on the reform movement, which resulted in the Reformed, Presbyterian, Anglican, and other churches we have today.
Dr Maier is a much-published author of both scholarly and popular works. His novels include two historical documentaries: Pontius Pilate and The Flames of Rome, as well as a theological thriller that became #1 national bestseller in religious fiction: A Skeleton in God's Closet. A sequel, More Than a Skeleton, appeared in 2003. His non-fiction works include In the Fullness of Time, a book that correlates secular evidence from the ancient world impinging on Jesus and early Christianity; Josephus - The Essential Works, a new translation/commentary on writings of the first-century Jewish historian; and Eusebius -- The Church History, a similar book on the first Christian historian.
Dr. Maier will be available for book signing before and after his lecture. Refreshments will be served.
